HOW TO MAKE BUTTER & HERB CLASSIC STUFFING
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cubes are dried and slightly toasted. Set aside.
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery, and carrots. Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.
Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Stir in the sage, thyme, rosemary, salt, and black pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes, allowing the herbs to release their flavours.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes with the vegetable and herb mixture. Toss to combine evenly.
Pour the chicken or vegetable broth over the bread mixture and toss until well combined. Allow the bread to absorb the liquid. Stir in the beaten eggs, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
Transfer the stuffing mixture to a greased baking dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving. Enjoy! 🙂
VIC'S QUICK TIPS FOR BUTTER & HERB CLASSIC STUFFING
- Toasting Consistency: Ensure the bread cubes are uniformly toasted – a golden exterior with a slightly crisp edge enhances the stuffing’s texture.
- Aromatics Release: Allow herbs to cook briefly to let their flavors blossom, contributing a rich aromatic profile to the stuffing.
- Foil Covering: Use aluminum foil during the initial baking to retain moisture, preventing the stuffing from drying out.
- Golden Crust: Uncover for the final minutes to achieve a golden, crisp top layer, adding a delightful contrast to the soft interior.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS & STORING
- Serving Suggestions: Serve the Butter and Herb Classic Stuffing as a delectable side dish for holiday feasts, pairing perfectly with roasted turkey or chicken.
- Storage Tips: To store leftovers, allow the stuffing to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Refrigerate promptly and consume within 3-4 days for optimal freshness.
- Reheating Instructions: Reheat individual servings in the microwave for a quick and convenient option. For larger portions, use an oven-safe dish, cover with foil, and reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until thoroughly heated. Add a splash of broth or water before reheating to maintain moisture and prevent dryness.
- Customization Ideas: Experiment with variations by adding ingredients like dried cranberries, nuts, or sausage for a unique twist. Transform leftovers into a breakfast delight by pairing them with a sunny-side-up egg or using the stuffing as a base for a savory breakfast casserole.
- Prep Ahead Tips: Simplify holiday cooking by preparing the stuffing components ahead: toast the bread cubes, sauté the vegetables, and measure out herbs. Assemble the stuffing the day before, refrigerate overnight, and bake just before serving for a stress-free holiday meal prep.
INGREDIENT SUBSTITUTIONS & VARIATIONS
- Vegan Version: You can make several swaps to adhere to plant-based preferences. Replace traditional butter with unsalted vegan butter or margarine. Substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth, ensuring it’s entirely plant-based. In lieu of eggs, explore alternatives like a plant-based egg substitute or a mixture of flaxseed meal and water.
- Gluten-Free Option: Select a gluten-free loaf of bread or gluten-free bread cubes, catering to those with gluten sensitivities. Additionally, confirm the gluten-free status of other ingredients, such as broth and seasonings, or choose certified gluten-free alternatives.
- Dairy-Free Variation: Opt for dairy-free butter or margarine instead of traditional butter. Ensure the chosen bread is dairy-free or select a suitable alternative. Verify that the broth is also dairy-free or use a dairy-free vegetable broth.
- For Herb and Seasoning Adjustments: Consider making adjustments to the flavour profile. Experiment with different herbs or a blend of fresh herbs to suit your taste. Tweak the salt and pepper quantities or opt for low-sodium broth for a healthier alternative.
- For a Nutritional Boost: Enhance the stuffing’s nutritional content with chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, for texture and extra nutrients. Incorporate dried fruits like cranberries or apricots to introduce a touch of sweetness.
- For a Customized Vegetable Mix: Customize the vegetable mix by adding bell peppers, mushrooms, or leeks to diversify the flavor palette. Adjust the quantity of vegetables based on personal preferences.
- For an Egg-Free Alternative: Explore an egg-free alternative by omitting eggs entirely or substituting them with unsweetened applesauce or mashed ripe bananas for binding.
- For a Reduced-Fat Version: Decrease the amount of butter for a lighter option. Additionally, consider using a cooking spray instead of greasing the baking dish to further reduce fat content.
