  • There is so much to love but this sandwich is ooey-gooey with melted cheese, sweet caramelized onions, tender beef patties, and crusty bread toasted in butter, there is so much to love!
  • This recipe is a great dinner recipe! This is definitely a sandwich I would make on a Saturday with my family when I have a little extra time, and I know everyone would love them!
  • Burger + Grilled Cheese = French Onion Cheesy Patty Melt! Patty melts are basically what you love about burgers, a big thick juicy patty, but the elements of a grilled cheese toasted in butter, then add sweet caramlized onion. It’s the best of both worlds!

Ingredients Needed

  • 1 Tbs Olive Oil

  • 4 Cups Yellow Onions, thinly sliced

  • Salt and Pepper, to taste

  • 2 lbs Lean Ground Beef

  • 8 Slices Crusty Bread, of your choice

  • 1/2 Cup Mozzarella Cheese, shredded

  • 1/2 Cup Cheddar Cheese, shredded

  • 1/2 Cup Guyere Cheese, shredded

  • 1/4 Cup Butter

How To Make This Recipe

Start by thinly slicing the onions. They should resemble half moon shapes.

Divide your 2 pounds of ground beef into 4 equal patties. Flatten them in between your hands to the general shape of your bread. My bread slices were oval shaped and so I formed my patties into oval shapes to fit in the sandwich properly. Salt and pepper each side of the patties and set aside for now.

In a cast iron skillet heat oil on medium heat. Add the beef patties. Cook the patties until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F, flipping halfway through. Place the beef patties in the oven on low to keep warm.

In the same pan, add the onions. The fat from the beef will help the onions caramelize. Caramelize the onions on medium low heat. This process will take abou 30-40 minutes. You want to be patient with your onions and and not cook them too high to avoid burning. Once the onions are fully caramelized, remove from the pan and set aside.

Melt butter in the medium-low pan and add the slices of bread to follow. Build the patty melt by adding the shredded cheeses on top of the first layer of bread, then the beef patty, 1-2 tablespoons of caramelized onion, more cheese on top, then lastly top with the second piece of bread. Cook the sandwich on each side until golden brown.

Serve the sandwiches immediately. Optionally, dip the sandwiches in gravy or au jous. Enjoy! 🙂

Notes + Tips

  • Shape the ground beef patties into the general shape of your bread slices. My bread was an oval shape so I shaped my patties into a rounded oval shape and flattened them between my hands.
  • Take your time with the caramelized onions! These onions will take about 35-40 minutes on a medium low heat. Do not rush the onions because they will take time to caramelize and create a sweet deep flavour.
  • Pick a crusty bread. Bread like calabrese, sourdough or french bread are all great choices because they will be sturdy and hold the sandwich together.
  • Optionally you can do a double-decker sandwich! This recipe calls for 4 sandwiches (with one beef patty per sandwich) but you could always make 2 double decker sandwiches instead with 2 patties on each sandwhich.
