These Shrove Tuesday pancakes are a classic authentic version of pancakes make on “Pancake Tuesday” or “Fat Tuesday in the United States. These pancakes are more like crepes, thin and stretchy and they don’t rise and fluff up like regular pancakes, but they are still so good! Served traditionally with lemon juice and granulated sugar. These pancakes are a nice light version of traditional pancakes.

Why You'll Love This Pancake Recipe
These pancakes are so yummy! These authentic Shove Tuesday Pancakes are more crepe like, giving them a soft, thin texture. The lemon juice and sugar on top is my new favourite way to eat these pancakes!
They are super easy and will take less than 30 minutes to put together. The batter comes together in one bowl and these pancakes are very easy to make.
If you are participating in Lent this year, this is an amazing way to indulge before 40 days of fasting. Traditionally, eating pancakes was the last chance for a spot of indulgence before 40 days of fasting, and also an opportunity to use up food that couldn’t be eaten during Lent.
Ingredients Needed
How To Make Shrove Tuesday Pancakes
In a mixing bowl add flour, beaten egg, milk, and water or liqueur. Use a whisk to mix the ingredients together until a cohesive batter is formed.
In a non-stick skillet, heat a dime size amount of butter over medium heat. Add enough batter to the pan so it reaches the edges of the skillet. You want to have the batter for the pancake be a thin crepe like shape, not too thick, but just enough batter to form a complete circular pancake.
Once bubbles appear on the pancake and the edges are golden, flip the pancake and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes or until a golden brown colour appears on each side of the pancake. Continue to cook the rest of the pancakes until there is no more batter.
Once the pancakes are ready to be served, cut a lemon into quarters. Squeeze the lemon juice over a pancake and sprinkle a tablespoon or so of sugar and serve. You can also pair these pancakes with maple syrup, yogurt or whatever you prefer. Enjoy!

Notes + Tips
Use a liqueur instead of water! Traditionally, a shot or two of liqueur is added to the pancake batter. Some liqueur options include: amaretto, rum, or even a cream liquor like baileys or rum chata.
Serve these pancakes with lemon and sugar and you will fall in love with the flavour! Typically, I use maple syrup over my pancakes but I tried the authentic way of squeezing lemon and sprinkling sugar over top and it is a GAME CHANGER! You could also serve these pancakes with: yogurt, peanut butter, butter, hone, jam etc…
You can make these pancakes large or small. I made my pancakes large, 8″ diameter and this yielded 4 large pancakes or you can make them small with a 4″ diameter and this will yield about 8-10 pancakes.
