Easy Italian Stromboli

Forget everything you know about pizza and make this easy Italian Stromboli. Similar to pizza, Stromboli contain various meats, cheese but does not have the sauce inside of the roll rather to dip it. It is rolled tightly, baked then cut into slices. It makes a great easy appetizer or a meal!

Pizza Dough

I used pre-made pizza dough. The store bought dough was 700g. You can definitely make homemade dough if you prefer but I just used pre-made out of connivence. If you do buy pizza dough make sure to get a similar size about 700g or so so its not too thick or thin.

The Cheese

The obvious cheese that I used was pizza mozzarella. This is the most basic and standard cheese to use for this Stromboli, since it is similar to pizza. Other cheese you can combine the mozzarella with or switch out completely:

  • Cheddar Cheese
  • Asiago
  • Parmesan
  • Provolone
  • Oaxaca

Just make sure the cheese is shredded and a low-moisture cheese to ensure it melts properly.

The Meats

The great part about this Stromboli is that is super customizable. For my Stromboli I used ham, salami, and pepperoni. There are unlimited amounts of meats and combinations you could choose to make this Stromboli. Other meats that would be tasty in this recipe:

  • Salami
  • Mortadella
  • Prosciutto

You really want to use cured meats in this Stromboli to give it that delicious taste. Get creative and try different combinations until you find one that you love!

Dipping Sauce

Marinara sauce works perfectly as a dipping sauce for this Stromboli. If you choose to switch up your toppings you can switch up the dipping sauce too. Here are some dipping sauce ideas:

  • Hot Sauce
  • Ranch
  • Pesto
  • Garlic Sauce
  • BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

  • 700 g Pre-Made Pizza Dough

  • 1/4 Cup All Purpose Flour (for rolling out pizza dough)

  • 5 Tbs Butter, melted (divided)

  • 4 Cloves Garlic, Minced

  • 2 Cups Mozzarella Cheese, Shredded

  • 10 Slices Deli Ham

  • 15 Slices Salami

  • 20 Slices Pepperoni

  • 1 Egg, Beaten

  • 1 Cup Marinara Sauce, For Dipping

Garlic Butter

  • 2 Tbs Parsley, Chopped

  • 1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder

  • 1/2 Tsp Onion Powder

  • 3 Tbs Parmesan Cheese

Method:

Step 1:

Roll out the dough onto your parchment lined baking tray. Shape the dough into a rectangle making sure the dough reaches the edges of the baking tray. Spread over the garlic butter leaving a 1/2-1 inch edge around the dough.

Step 2:

Sprinkle half of the cheese, layer the meats and then add the rest of the cheese.

Step 3:

Beat the egg and then use pastry brush to brush the exposed edges of the dough. Carefully, roll up the Stromboli tightly.

Step 4:

Spread the garlic butter over the Stromboli. Cut diagonal slits over the Stromboli and then bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 5:

Cut the Stromboli up into slices and dip it in marinara sauce. Enjoy! 🙂

Garlic Butter

  • 2 Tbs Parsley, Chopped
  • 1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 Tsp Onion Powder
  • 3 Tbs Parmesan Cheese

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven for 400 degrees F.
  • Place parchment paper on a baking sheet. Lightly flour the parchment paper and then place dough on the baking tray.
  • Roll pizza dough out into a rectangle. Push the dough all the way to the edges of the baking tray making a thin and even layer with the dough.
  • In a bowl combine 3 tbs of butter (of the 5 tbs of butter) and minced garlic. Brush the garlic butter over the dough. Then, sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese over the dough.
  • Top the dough with a layer of ham, pepperoni, and salami. Add the other cup of mozzarella cheese over top.
  • In a small bowl, beat the egg. Use a pastry brush to brush the edges of the stromboli. This will help seal the stromboli once you roll it up.
  • Carefully roll up the stromboli starting from the long edge of it. Make sure to roll tightly and evenly.

Garlic Butter

  • Combine the rest of the butter, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley, and parmsean cheese. Brush over top of the stromboli making sure to get the sides as well. Use a sharp knife to cut diagonal slits on top of the stromboli. I cut about 5 slits about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 25 minutes until you see that the dough is golden brown. Use a serrated knife to cut the stromboli into pieces. Serve with marinara sauce and enjoy! 🙂
