I used cabernet sauvignonwine for this recipe. I highly recommend using a sweeter tasting wine rather than a dry wine. Sangria is paired with fruit and should have a sweeter taste. I know the amount of wine options can be overwhelming but try to look for a sweet wine, this can include:
Lambrusco Dolce
Zinf Andel
Garnacha
Malbec
Merlot
I wouldn’t go higher than a cabernet sauvignon because then it can taste too dry and not compliment the sangria properly.
Note: This recipe also calls for sprite but feel free to use fresca, 7up, ginger-ale or a light lemon pop to top this sangria!
How to Muddle
Muddling is a technique used in drinks to gently mash herbs or fruit to release their juices. This helps the flavors to bind with the alcohol better than simply using them whole. Muddling is used in many popular cocktails, like the Mojito and Whiskey Smash.
For this particular drink you are going to muddle the cranberries and orange slice with honey. Muddle until you see the juices release. Once the fruits are muddled, place a fine mesh strainer over your serving glass and place the fruit in the strainer. Use a spoon to push the fruit through the strainer releasing the muddled juices. See my youtube video on how I made this drink to visually see how it is done.
Fruits & Garnishes
This holiday sangria has all of those Christmas-y flavours such as orange, cranberry, and cinnamon. Sangria is very customizable so feel free to get creative and make this drink special to you! Add whatever fruits and garnishes you like or prefer. Here are some other ideas that pair well with red sangria:
Muddle the cranberries and orange with honey until juices form. Place the muddled fruit over a fine mesh strainer and strain the juices into your serving glass.
Step 2:
Add ice and a shot of brandy. Fill with red wine 3/4 of the way and top with sprite.
Step 3:
Garnish with cinnamon stick, rosemary and apple. Enjoy! 🙂
